28 Aug Emissions Based Parking Charges are on the Way
A ground-breaking solution developed by RingGo is about to give councils around the UK greater control over emission levels in towns and cities.
RingGo’s Emission Based Parking Product will allow councils to charge drivers more to park based on their emissions.
The system targets higher polluting vehicles with a graduated level of charges and rewards electric and hybrid vehicle users with lower tariffs.
The ultimate aim of the product is to incentivise the use of eco-friendlier vehicles and improve air quality.
The system is already in use in the City of London on weekdays between 8am to 7pm.
Based on the success of the project, uptake of the new system could spread to other councils in the same way the Low Emissions Zones project spread from London to Glasgow and Dublin.
The current emissions-based parking costs in the Square Mile are set at:
|Type of vehicle||Cost per 15 mins||Cost per hour|
|Low emission (e.g. electric, hybrid)||£1||£4.00|
|Petrol vehicles registered from 2005 onwards||£1.30||£5.20|
|Diesel vehicles registered from 2015 onwards||£1.30||£5.20|
